How this jewellery was made

Hand made using traditional methods. The ring was formed from a thick oval sterling silver wire. The stone setting was formed by fitting a strip of fine silver around the garnet then soldering this to a sheet of silver to make a cup the correct size for the stone to sit in. The excess silver around the base was then sawn away and then filed until the base was flush with the walls of the stone setting, known as a bezel setting. The pieces were then sanded with several grades of abrasive papers to smooth all the edges and remove scratches. The ring was textured by hammering then the cup was soldered to the ring. It was placed in a warm pickling solution to remove the fire scale caused by the blow torch. Then followed lots of cleaning and polishing to give the ring its lovely sheen. Lastly the stone was placed in the cup and the silver bezel pushed over the edges of the stone to hold it in place and the setting was burnished.
